Austin – a distinct personality with many layers. My website, Austin’s Pockets, is dedicated to exploring hidden gems throughout Austin and surrounding communities that give it the interest and uniqueness that people love. As I show newcomers around and help them narrow down living options, there are several areas I make sure to show them. Most people have heard of the exciting, vibrant, and growing Austin downtown district. However, many people can’t afford the prices, want more green space, or just want to explore other options.

In a brief series of articles, we will be exploring pocket neighborhoods in both south and north Austin. For this particular discussion we will be concentrating on south Austin.

South Austin TX

Just south of the river, (Town Lake…now named Lady Bird Lake), SoCo is definitely one of the “coolest” spots to call home.  I love the Barton Hills and Zilker neighborhoods where homes run up and down the hills in walking distance to some of Austin’s most yummy restaurants along Barton Springs Blvd. Close by is Zilker Park with events to enjoy throughout the year.  A lovely historic neighborhood, Travis Heights, has smaller cottages to larger homes within a short walk down the hill to South Congress, which is probably the most talked about stretch of road in Austin.

A little less pricey but still close to all things SoCo, South Lamar from Barton Springs to Highway 290 provides a lower budget, relaxed lifestyle, and is still walk-able to many eateries, shops, and night-spots. Westgate is another option just south of Highway 290 where homes begin from the 200’s. It’s still within 5-10 minutes of downtown where home prices are 500+, but has the same local options along with the popular suburban type stores and restaurants.  Both are close to the tourist hot spots, but they each have a smaller community feel where you can plant roots, know your neighbors, and probably meet a few original homeowners!
